TOPIC 1: Mobile Phones and Sim Cards

What's a sim free mobile phone?

A sim free mobile is just a mobile phone in its purest form, as it was manufactured. When a mobile is built, it isn't put together with any contract or company network in mind; it's just a brand new mobile phone ready to be used with the sim card you choose to insert. It's a bit like your own new computer before you had an internet provider or an account set up. It's important to differentiate between sim free mobile phones and unlocked phones, which are by definition tampered goods. Have a look at our sim free phones.

What do I need to make a sim free mobile phone work?

Just read the instructions, charge the battery, insert your existing sim card (any network, contract or not) or a new sim card, turn it on and you're ready. You may not be able to use all mobile phones in all countries, but more and more phones can be used anywhere there is a mobile phone telecommunications network, so long as you have the right sim card.

What does Dual Band and Tri Band mean? Or even Quad Band? Where in The World can I use that phone!?

Dual band phones tend to work in the UK and Europe and most of the world (GSM 1800 and GSM 900), whilst in America you need a phone that can take GSM 1900 so most often a Tri band or Quad band phone is the best option.

What is a Sim Card?

A Sim Card is the hardware with which you actually buy and use 'air time.' It fits into your phone, and gives you access to specific network providers. So, just like a computer needs to link up with an Internet Provider before you can surf the web, a mobile phone needs a network sim card to communicate with the world. All you have to do is choose which network is best for you. You can find an overview of the main United Kingdom Pay As You Go sim cards page.

Why should I pay for a sim free mobile phone when I can get one free on a contract?

Well you may not want a contract, or you may live in a country where you cannot get a contract, or you may have to pay a deposit before you are allowed the contract, or you may need lots of phones, or you may not want to be committed to paying a network provider a chunk of money for calls you do not know for sure you are going to make, or you may not be able to get the very latest phone on contract yet, or you may have lost/broken/swallowed your last phone and want a brand new replacement to use your current sim card or contract sim card in. There are lots of reasons.

TOPIC 2: Mobile Phone Applications

Eh?

These days, your mobile phone does a lot more than make and receive telephone calls. You can create and send all manner of text, image and sound files, email friends, colleagues or relatives anywhere in the world or browse your favourite websites and chat rooms. All the above can be done with varying degrees of speed as well. You can even operate your mobile phone remotely with no wires whilst it is still safely stored in your carry bag. You can download, store and playback music and video, create spreadsheets and Word documents and so much more. Without doubt, the mobile phone will continue to evolve and allow us to obtain information and communicate whilst on the move or away from home.

So it is important to know that your new sim free mobile phone can support the applications you want it to. Check out the phone spec page of the phone you are interested after finding it on our sim free phones page.

Bluetooth Technology?

This device communication technology means your mobile phone can communicate with other hardware without the need for wires and without the need for each bit of kit to be in line of sight. So hands free head sets have been transformed, as have car kits. So long as each piece of hardware (phone, headset, car kit, laptop etc) has the Bluetooth technology incorporated and once they are 'paired' with each other, they can send and receive information within a good few meters of each other, even if in different rooms or the mobile phone is in your pocket when a call comes through on your head set. Be aware that all Bluetooth enabled units should be able to communicate with each other, they do not have to be the same brand or make, so a Nokia Handset should be able to communicate with a Motorola Head Set.

Multi Media Messaging (MMS)?

A mobile phone with MMS capability can send or receive images/photos as well as text. So if you have an integrated camera on your mobile, you can send a photo just like you would a text message. It normally costs a bit more to send it though.
